What’s noisy as an elephant one minute and as quiet as a mouse the next? (Parents should understand this one!) It’s a newborn baby! If you prefer the mouse-like, quiet type of child, there are a few things you should be cognizant of regarding oral health for your children. Use the tips below to help your little one keep solid oral health, and come stop by for an exam in our office so that we can give them the assistance they deserve.
Perhaps the most impactful thing you can do is to start them on a low-sugar diet. Instead of sodas, potato chips and candies, give fresh vegetables and whole grains. As they grow, they’ll begin to decide to have these types of foods by themselves, and their teeth will be much stronger.
Help your child to drink from a full cup by the time they are one year old. Extended use of baby cups and sippy cups can weaken the formations of the teeth and could need professional treatment to correct.
Finally, make sure you’re teaching your child to brush their teeth. If they’re less than two years of age, coordinate with us about whether using toothpaste is proper. If they’re old enough to brush their teeth on their own, supervise them to make sure they’re brushing for a full two minutes interval and that they’re not swallowing the toothpaste.
